Cartagena (Region of Murcia, Spain) is one of the most historical cities in Spain. It was founded in 227 B.C under the name of "Qart Hadasht (new city)" by Asdrúbal. Once the Romans settled in this land they called it "Carthago Nova", and at that moment, Cartagena was a reference economically in Spain.
This city is in the south-east of Spain, hence its port is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
Cartagena has over 220.000 inhabitants, so we can see it is a little city. The province capital is Murcia which has about 440.000 inhabitants. There is a popular dissatisfaction in Cartagena population because of the majority of them believe Cartagena deserves to become, at least, in a province due to the relevant history that it has.
In summer, Cartagena can reach 36-38 degrees as maximum. On the other hand it hardly reaches 0 degrees in winter because the sea regulates the temperature. In Murcia, for example, the temperature is a little different: hotter in summer and colder in winter.
There are several universities. It's very popular the engineer and architect studies in the city. As a result of that, Cartagena is so beautiful and artistic. We've got relevant monuments like the submarine "Isaac peral", the first submarine torpedo boat.
